Background

One of the challenges highlighted by farmers is the reliance on chemical inputs and fertilizers to sustain the production of rice. Through time, the soil gets depleted, hence the amount of needed chemical fertilizers also increases, and along with it is the cost. Because of this, the LGU recognizes the importance of returning to regenerative methods to safeguard the sustainability of their soil and food production.

This trial project wants to test if it is feasible to go by natural inputs alone and discontinue the usual farming practice of using chemical fertilizers.

OBJECTIVES

This project has the following objectives:

  1. To explore the impact of completely substituting chemical fertilizers with natural inputs using DBSC.

  2. To help formulate good protocols and recommendations on various applications of the product.

Application of Dr. Bo’s Super Compost (DBSC) in trial areas

Trial areas 1-3 were exclusively applied with DBSC in varying amounts. Trial area 4 is the control plot, utilizing the usual farmer practice (chemical inputs).

This trial aims to assess the impact of switching from chemical fertilizers to fully natural inputs through Dr. Bo’s Super Compost.

RESULTS

Areas 2 and 3, which exclusively received DBSC, yielded more than the control area which was exclusively applied with chemical inputs. Area 1 received no chemical fertilizers and DBSC applied was below the minimum advised dosage of 100kg per hectare.

The cost-benefit analysis showed the gains that farmers received from the increased yield in area 2 and 3. This analysis is based on the incremental revenues gained on top of the base yield (control).

There is increased income and yields from the exclusive application of DBSC despite the elimination of chemical fertilizers.

Dr. Bo’s Super Compost, when applied at the right doses, was sufficient on its own in achieving desired production levels.

The 89% increase in yield experienced by the rice farmers in LGU Pikit was achieved through a combination of protocols accompanying the use of Dr. Bo’s Super Compost (DBSC).

DBSC was applied only during the first cropping; however, the succeeding croppings of rice still sustained positive results and increased yields!
