The price of rice continues to increase in the face of high importation and low production
In an analysis by DOST, the high levels of importation of rice amidst its low production contributes a lot in making rice continuously expensive for Filipinos. Our country has never been self-sufficient in rice for a long time, as reflected in our Rice Self-Sufficiency Ratio (SSR), making the Philippines the world’s largest rice importer.
This dilemma plagues both farmers and consumers, with rice farmers economically suffering the most. Low farm productivity and high production costs result in poor farmers and less food for Filipinos.
What can we do?
One of our government’s primary strategies is to boost local production, and rightly so. Increasing our self-sufficiency starts with addressing the problem at the farm level. Unsustainable farm practices and low soil fertility are among the major culprits in the difficulty of farmers to increase their yield.
